The full meaning

Lekker means great, nice, tasty, or fun in South African slang. Food can be lekker, a party can be lekker, a person can be lekker, and "sleep lekker" means sleep well. It's one of the most beloved words in South African English.

Where “lekker” comes from

Borrowed from Afrikaans (and ultimately Dutch), where it originally meant tasty. South African English adopted it for anything pleasant, and it's used across communities and languages throughout the country and in Zimbabwe too.

How it’s actually used

Drop it wherever "great" fits: "that braai was lekker," "have a lekker day." "Local is lekker" is a famous phrase celebrating homegrown things.

The weekend was lekker, we braaied till late.
This bread is lekker, where did you buy it?
Have a lekker holiday, see you in January.
