The full meaning

A sigma (or "sigma male") is someone who is successful, confident, and cool without seeking approval — the self-reliant "lone wolf" type who operates outside the usual social hierarchy. Among younger kids, though, the meaning has loosened: "that's so sigma" often just means "that's really cool or impressive."

Where “sigma” comes from

The term comes from internet "male hierarchy" theories that ranked men as alpha, beta, and so on — sigma was proposed as the wildcard who ignores the ranking entirely. Through memes (often featuring characters like Patrick Bateman or gym/hustle edits), it drifted into mainstream youth slang, where kids now use it mostly detached from the original theory.

How it’s actually used

Used both sincerely ("he's a sigma — does his own thing") and ironically as a meme. "Sigma grindset" mocks or celebrates extreme hustle-culture attitudes, depending on who's saying it.

He skipped the party to work on his startup — certified sigma.
Building your own gaming PC at twelve? That's sigma behavior.
She has that sigma energy: quiet, focused, doesn't care what anyone thinks.

✔ For parents & teachers

Mostly harmless as kids use it — a synonym for cool or independent. Worth knowing: the term originally comes from online "male hierarchy" content, some of which promotes toxic ideas about masculinity. If a teen is deep into sincere "sigma male" content (not just the memes), it may be worth a conversation about where those ideas come from.
